Installing PulseEffects on a Raspberry Pi

This document will guide you through the installation of PulseEffects on one of the platforms on the Operating System and driver installation page and depends on that installation.

Install:

• Before installing any compiled software, set these compiler optimization flags. This must be repeated after a reboot or if you use a different terminal window. Note that with this optimization, this image may not work on other Raspberry Pi hardware.

  # For a 64-bit operating system on a Raspberry Pi 4:

  # For a 64-bit operating system on a Raspberry Pi 5:

• Equalizers and notch filters.
  • PulseEffects, Audio effects for PulseAudio.
    PulseAudio is required. PulseAudio is the default on DietPi.
    If you want to install the rnnoise filter, you will have to compile pulseeffects from source.
    Choose one of the installation methods below:
    • Install the package
      • sudo apt install pulseeffects
      • Jump down to the reboot step.
    • Compile from source
      Note that earlier system may have libavcodec59 installed and will cause this installation to fail.
      • Prerequisites

        # Build rnnoise
        cd ~/
        git clone https://gitlab.xiph.org/xiph/rnnoise.git
        cd rnnoise
        ./autogen.sh
        ./configure
        make -j4
        sudo make install
        sudo ldconfig
        

      • Build pulseeffects

        cd ~/
        git clone https://github.com/wwmm/easyeffects.git
        cd easyeffects
        
        # Select the latest version of PulseEffects.
        git checkout v4.8.7
        
        meson _build --prefix=/usr
        sudo ninja -C _build install
        sudo ldconfig
        

    • reboot
    • Make a notch filter with PulseEffects
      • In PulseEffects, select the Speaker icon.
        Scroll down to "Filter" and select the box to the left of it.
        In the filter window, select 18dB/oct Bandreject.
        Under resonance, enter 30 dB.
        Enter the frequency that you want to notch out.
    • Customizing the spectrum display
      • Click the Menu button on the title bar near the right edge.
        Click Preferences.
        Click the Spectrum tab.
        You can increase the number of points to help in identifying an unwanted carrier.
        You can choose lines if you prefer to make the display have curves.
